Colorado senate passes magazine limit 18-17

Tough yes votes for Giron, Kerr, Newell, Todd and Kefalas. All staying with @cosendem caucus, despite heavy pressure. #COleg

The Colorado has voted 18-17 to pass the controversial House Bill 1224, which bans magazines larger than 15 rounds and threatens to drive manufacturer Magpul out of the state. State Sen. Greg Brophy, a Republican, told his colleagues, “I will willfully and purposefully and civilly disobey this law.”

“I’m telling you right now: I will not obey this law,” @senatorbrophy on mag limit. Crowd applauds, gaveled down. HB1224 #coleg

ALERT: Colorado Senate passes bill on limit for ammunition magazines – dpo.st/WEHkHo #coleg by @kurtisalee

— The Denver Post (@denverpost) March 11, 2013

The measure now heads back to the House for a vote because it was amended in the Senate.

If passed, anyone who currently possesses a magazine that holds more than 15 rounds is able to keep it, though if they transfer or sell the magazine, that individual would face a class 2 misdemeanor charge.

Seven gun control laws have been debated contentiously over the past several days, and reaction to the bill’s passage was swift.

@olds_cool Remember when “shall not be questioned” “shall not be infringed” were lost to a majority vote? #Coleg #2a

Disappointed in my @sennewell regarding her Yes vote on #maglimits. It’s a bad law and compliance will be low. #coleg #copolitics

— Tom (@BoreGuru) March 11, 2013

@amyolivershow #COleg #guncontrol I suspect magpul will see a surge in CO sales until ban takes affect

— David (@skypilot_dlc) March 11, 2013

Now gun owners will create a backlash and we will have Tea Party candidates in office. #COleg you give us no choice. Arbitrary limits.

— Hecta Rhombus(@Tomkaah) March 11, 2013

#COLeg @hickforco @cosendem Why was there little justification for a 15 round limit? Explain to us why non-assault weapons are illegal now

— Hecta Rhombus(@Tomkaah) March 11, 2013

Good that, like Obama, I only have to obey the laws that I like #coleg

Restricting my access to arms in common use and standard-capacity magazines does NOTHING to prevent crime. #coleg

I’d like to welcome magpul to Wyoming. We love jobs and the 2nd amendment. #COleg

Plenty were anxious to roll out the welcome mat for Magpul, and the sweeping scope of Colorado’s gun control package has drawn interest from across the nation.

Jobs jobs jobs leaving Colorado. @cosendem #COleg

@senatorbrophy @jessie4co u might want to change your twitter info to destroying north CO jobs, create a economy that works for none #coleg

CO Dems show they want to legalize freedom when convenient. Ban some gun magazines, but legalize pot. Hypocrites #legalizeitall #COleg #tcot

I’d like to welcome @magpul_hq to North Carolina. We could use the jobs to help recover from Bev Perdue’s administration. #COleg

I’m waiting on pins and needles here for @magpul_hq to announce their move to the cowboy state where we love our 2nd amendment. #COleg

There was an unconfirmed report that Democratic Rep. Mike McLachlan might be flip-flopping on HB 1224, which heads back to the state House in its amended form. Some tweets suggest that House Speaker Mark Ferrandino has clamped down, though, although the precise “safe” limit of magazine capacity seems to be just as arbitrary as critics suggest.

Mike McLachlan, D-Durango, now says he’s undecided on HB 1224, ammunition magazine limits, as it returns to House. #copolitics #coleg

@janus303 @kurtisalee Update from @markferrandino: @mclachlanfor59 still supports 15-round #MagBan; would support going to 30. #COleg

@elistokols @kurtisalee @markferrandino @mclachlanfor59 I think he said that in committee, so that’s not really new.

@janus303 True. Speaker did feel compelled to check with McLachlan today, as @repmcnulty kindly pointed out. #COleg
