North Korea test-fires long-range rocket, claims satellite enters orbit

North Korea has test-fired a long-range missile, with a trajectory over Okinawa and the Philippines. Naturally, South Korea and Japan are not happy. North Korean state-run radio says that the nation has put a satellite in orbit.

FLASH: North Korea confirms satellite successfully entered orbit: Yonhap

— Reuters Top News (@Reuters) December 12, 2012

Many initial reports called the launch a failure, but later reports indicated that it was successful. Some are claiming that it may have achieved “staging,” which means that the rocket’s three stages fired as expected. The third stage might have fallen as far away as the Philippines, according to reports. Hence, the claim of a satellite launch seems to have some credibility, at least in terms of the rocket not disintegrating.

Nork ICBM appears to have achieved staging. Uh oh.

@cuffymeh So, it was a successful launch? That’s how I read your tweets.

— Ken Gardner (@kesgardner) December 12, 2012

@kesgardner dunno yet. But I wouldn’t call it an instant failure either. There could be a sat up there right now.

UPDATE: North Korea claims they launched a rocket, but it turned out to be one of Kim Jong-un’s many disgusting snot rockets.

— Disalmanac (@Disalmanac) December 12, 2012

@disalmanac I’m fairly certain that their rockets work on some convoluted US Aid Rice and pulley / catapult system.
